Azuma Makoto submerges floral sculpture on the seabed
Flower artist Azuma Makoto presents the third installment of his In Bloom series, submerging a botanical sculpture in the uncharted waters of Japan. With his blend of artistic creativity and botanical expertise, Makoto has redefined the boundaries of floral art, taking it to new depths — quite literally. Through this series, the delicate beauty of flowers merges with the fluidity of water, symbolizing the interdependence and harmony between humans and the environment. Each installation is meticulously crafted, featuring a combination of vibrant blooms, intricate foliage, and submerged elements that create a surreal and ethereal setting.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Makoto’s installations also carry a deeper message about the relationship between humans and the natural world. By immersing flowers in water, Makoto transforms them into living sculptures, blurring the line between the ephemeral and the enduring. His creations serve as a reminder of the fragility and resilience of life, encouraging us to appreciate the fleeting moments of beauty that surround us.

emphasizing fragility and ephemerality
For this latest installment, Azuma Makoto (see more here) carefully chose a distinct location that goes beyond the pristine beauty of clear waters, embracing the untamed essence of the sea. The selected installation point conveys a sense of ruggedness, immersing viewers in the wildness of nature. Furthermore, Makoto opted for different flower materials compared to his previous series, specifically selecting ones with unique shapes and textures.
The resulting composition seamlessly blends with the underwater environment, becoming an organic part of the submerged world. Similar to his Frozen Flowers project, Makoto has experimented with this environment. Through altering colors, materials, shapes, and flower arrangements, he continuously challenges himself to capture the diverse expressions of flowers.
