AVANT-GARDE CRAFT AND RESONANT LANDSCAPES

As the world’s leading event for international design and lifestyle, Maison&Objet focuses on reinforcing Hong Kong’s role as Asia’s premier hub for design, innovation, and global collaboration. Building upon this mission, the design event deepens its commitment to the avant-garde through two special showcases that bridge material innovation and artistic heritage. The Mobilier National x Maison&Objet collaboration co-presents the Design Showcase Award 2025, featuring the ‘Dining Room’ by Paris-based designer Paul Bonlarron. This work transforms culinary by-products into material and spectacle, incorporating eggshell-enamel plates and vegetable-bioplastic stained glass windows.

Providing a shift in scale and material experience, Italian furniture brand Moroso presents ‘Resonant Landscapes’ along La Rue, a connective passageway within the event’s layout. Curated by Patrizia Moroso, the installation — dedicated to the Pebble Rubble collection — moves beyond utility into a felt experience of empathy and connection. Drawing on the slow, organic rhythms of nature, the sculptural, modular forms are developed from 3D scans of natural surfaces like rocks and moss.

SEVEN SHOWCASES UNLOCK THE FUTURE OF EAST-WEST INTERIORS

The core journey of the Design Showcase section interprets the Crossroads theme through a collection of seven showcases. Designers Hubert Le Gall and Alfred Lam reimagine the spirit of a traditional Beijing Siheyuan courtyards through a Parisian lens. The concept unfolds in five distinct zones — living, dining, lounge, reading, and garden — blending antique and vintage finds with Le Gall’s sculptural pieces for a transportive, cross-cultural narrative.

Kristina Zanic presents ‘Beyond Majlis,’ a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Middle Eastern gathering space. Inspired by Dubai’s desert landscape, the design uses curved modular seating as a flexible social configuration beneath a stretched, star-evoking light installation while animated calligraphy projections blur the line between the digital and physical worlds. It honors the enduring tradition of the Majlis while reflecting Dubai’s evolving identity.

The third showcase presents Aparna Kaushik’s serene lounge, ‘Rooh Dilli,’ which is inspired by New Delhi’s grand, symmetrical architecture and imperial history. The design is a careful mix of European structure and traditional Indian craftsmanship. It uses materials like hand-carved stone from Rajasthan and intricately woven carpets. The result is a richly tactile, yet peaceful space that evolves Indian heritage with modern purpose.

Steve Leung’s ‘Connect’ is a design exploration centered on the fusion of tradition and modernity, as well as Eastern and Western influences. The showcase presents a dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary aesthetics, guiding viewers into deep reflection on nature, humanity, and design. The space is framed by a clean-lined contemporary structure and adorned with decorations inspired by tradition and nature, including a handmade carpet, designer lamps, and sculptures of intangible cultural heritage, interpreting a new realm of contemporary aesthetics that is inclusive and ever-renewing.

Wu Bin’s ‘Hybridization: Garden Wanderings’ is a quiet, multisensory experience designed to slow down the fast pace of city life in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Visitors walk a dim, textured path where details like bark-like walls and the scent of dried spices blur the line between being inside and outside. The space uses reclaimed materials and subtle lighting to create a ‘Garden of Memory,’ helping visitors find an emotional connection between the urban setting and their own feelings.

Teo Yang presents ‘Fragments of HK, A Letter from Seoul,’ a library-like interior that becomes a cultural portrait of Hong Kong as remembered by generations of South Koreans. Posters, music, and film stills are arranged like books, where personal taste expands into a public archive. Echoing the South Korean tradition of the library as a space for conversation, the showcase invites dialogue and contemplation, linking Seoul and Hong Kong in reflective correspondence.
