Deferred Futures Translates AI into Light, Structure, and motion

Deferred Futures by UNFOLD PLANE presents a spatial interpretation of Biin Shen’s Between 0&1 at the Chengdu Biennale 2026 – Pulse of Life. The installation translates the artwork’s investigation of artificial intelligence, understood as a system shaped by continuous feedback between human input and algorithmic prediction, into an integrated architectural environment.

Three digital screens are suspended within a modular aluminum extrusion frame, forming a sequence of vertical illuminated objects. Each screen is paired with a rear-mounted lightbox emitting bright white light. Monochromatic blue light tubes are aligned with the structural frame, positioned along the upper beam and at the corners of the space. Image, structure, illumination, and sound operate as a coordinated spatial system, extending the digital content into the surrounding environment. The exhibition is organized along a straight circulation axis defined by a brushed stainless steel pathway. This linear route establishes orientation and directs movement toward the suspended screens. Its precise geometry contrasts with the enclosure, where walls and floors are clad entirely in reflective acrylic panels. These surfaces produce ripple-like distortions, preventing stable reflections and maintaining a condition in which imagery remains visible but unresolved.

UNFOLD PLANE shapes a Responsive Spatial Field of Image and light

Two parallel spatial conditions emerge: a defined, axial progression along the steel path and a diffuse perceptual field within the reflective enclosure. Embedded millimeter-wave radar sensors in the ceiling register visitor presence and movement. As viewers advance, ambient lighting shifts from bright white to low-intensity monochromatic blue, aligning the spatial atmosphere with the tonal register of the AI-generated imagery. The environment responds in measurable ways to occupation, positioning perception as an active component within the system. As movement continues along the axis, attention gradually consolidates at the suspended screens. Within the digital image, visual information appears resolved and legible, contrasting with the indeterminate reflections that surround it. The spatial sequence culminates at this point of visual clarity, where diffuse perception gives way to focus and stabilization.

Two small apertures punctuate the boundary between the exhibition interior and the public corridor, one positioned at adult eye level and one lower for children. Light from the installation extends outward through these openings. From the exterior, reflective acrylic surfaces fragment and distort the interior imagery, rendering it partially visible yet unresolved. The apertures mediate the threshold between corridor and exhibition, extending the project’s perceptual logic beyond the enclosed space. Deferred Futures by creative studio UNFOLD PLANE operates as a responsive spatial apparatus in which image, structure, light, and viewer form an interconnected system. The artwork’s conceptual framework, previously confined to the digital screen, is translated into a material and environmental condition. Through movement and feedback, the exhibition unfolds as a continuously evolving spatial event.
