Eight lenses surround issey miyake’s UROKO sunglasses

Issey Miyake Eyes releases UROKO, a pair of sunglasses with eight concave lenses inspired by the works of one of Japan’s celebrated potters, Shoji Kamoda. Instead of using a single flat lens, the eyewear with 3D printed components uses multiple optical parts, including eight lenses in total, with four lenses sitting on each side of the frame. They are arranged in a row, which follows the layout and idea of repetition seen in Shoji Kamoda’s ceramics.

Each lens uses a concave cut, so they come up inward instead of outward. The design allows the parts to sit close together inside the frame, and without this shaping, the lenses would take up more space and the structure would become large. The frame itself supports the rows of lenses by holding them in a visible sequence. From afar, one may think it is a large necklace until they come close and see that the cuts are lenses and the sides can fold.

Uneven surface reflects shoji kamoda’s ceramic works

The Issey Miyake Eyes sunglasses UROKO uses 3D printing for the frame, a hint of the traditional Japanese ceramic crafts being merged with new technologies. After printing, the frame goes through a finishing process, leaving out details that make the eyewear appear uneven. The approach reflects the ceramic reference again because in Shoji Kamoda’s work, no surface is perfectly even. In the eyewear, each piece shows slight variation, too.

Up close, viewers can see the glistening surface similar to a ceramic work. The accessory may resemble a bracelet or necklace, but the visible silver screws already indicate it’s a pair of sunglasses. There are two colored lenses available so far: Dark Gray and Brown. Both of the designs evoke the ceramic works of Shoji Kamoda, and for UROKO sunglasses, Issey Miyake keeps the spirit of his creations alive and fascinating (still). Issey Miyake Eyes presents the recent eyewear for the IM MEN Spring Summer 2026 collection named Dancing Texture.
