instant camera that prints photos as receipts

Creator Box Art makes an instant camera shaped like a meter box that prints receipt photos using thermal heat. All handmade, the machine produces images that are grainier and warmer than usual on a piece of paper. The brain of the instant camera that prints receipt-like photos is a Raspberry Pi Zero, which is a fully functional computer roughly the size of a credit card. Then, there’s a dedicated camera module that connects to the board using a flat ribbon cable and handles the actual image capture.

The machine turns on because of a disassembled power bank, which has a lithium-ion battery pack with its charging circuit and voltage regulator already built in. A thermal sensor salvaged from the power bank itself monitors temperature and cuts power to the instant camera that prints receipt-like photos if things get too warm. Then, the creator adds the printer, which is a small thermal device that uses heat rather than ink. Where heat touches the paper, the dye darkens, forming the image. No ink cartridges, just the paper roll and a little bit of heat on it.

Device resembling a meter box or vintage polaroid

In a blog post, the creator Box Art details the making of the instant camera that prints receipt-like photos. The device is modeled in FreeCAD and its body is 3D printed in PLA plastic. These parts were sanded, primed, and spray-painted in the colors yellow and black, reminiscent of the Polaroid cameras with film back in the day. The lens sits to the upper left of the front face, and below it, two dark horizontal slits mark where the printed photo emerges.

A round black shutter button sits at the top right, and on the side panel, a small toggle switch and a shutdown button are paired with three LEDs: blue for power on, green for camera active, red for photo being taken. The code running the instant camera that prints receipt-like photos is written in Python, with functions that check each captured image for brightness and apply adjustments before sending it to print. As for the photos, they appear dark, almost monochromatic, because of the heat. That’s what the user can get, especially since that’s the purpose of this DIY instant camera: to print photos as receipts, but this time, ones that users will want to keep.
