GARY THE SNAIL BECOMES A FUNCTIONAL SCULPTURE

South Korean content creator and 3D pen artist Momandeum transforms a low-cost alarm clock into a sculptural speaker modeled after Gary, SpongeBob SquarePants’ intelligent pet snail. Combining reused electronics with custom 3D-printed components, the project recreates the animated character while giving the object a new set of everyday functions.

Rather than simply placing a speaker inside a decorative shell, Momandeum reorganizes the alarm clock’s internal components around Gary’s recognizable form. The snail’s shell houses the speaker, while its circular turntable-style base conceals the circuit board and integrates a wireless charging pad for smartphones.

3D-PRINTED PARTS RECREATE THE CARTOON CHARACTER

The making process begins with the complete disassembly of the original clock, allowing its electronic parts to be measured and incorporated into a new digital model. Momandeum then designs the body, shell, eyes, and supporting structure before producing the components through 3D printing.

Once printed, the pieces undergo an extensive finishing process. Supports are removed, surfaces are trimmed and sanded, and multiple layers of primer and paint are applied. Particular attention is given to reproducing the flat colors, outlines, and exaggerated details associated with the visual language of the cartoon.

MAGNETS BRING THE SPEAKER AND CHARGER TOGETHER

Magnets connect the individual elements during the final assembly, making it possible to access the electronics while preserving the appearance of a single continuous sculpture. The base supports Gary’s body while discreetly accommodating the charging coil, wiring, and original alarm clock circuitry.

The completed object operates simultaneously as a character sculpture, Bluetooth speaker, and wireless phone charger. In a fitting reference to the SpongeBob universe, the first sounds played through Gary’s newly constructed shell are a sequence of meows.
