studio drift fills las vegas lobby with moving flowers

Studio DRIFT installs Shy Society Palazzo, a kinetic art installation above the Palazzo lobby at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, bringing together two of the Amsterdam-based studio’s works, Shylight and Meadow. Comprising nine Shylight sculptures and 18 Meadow elements, the suspended installation translates the opening and closing of flowers into a continually changing choreography.

Shy Society Palazzo depends on movement to define the work. The individual Shylight elements behave like solitary flowers or dancers, while the larger Meadow grouping operates collectively, creating shifting relationships between individual and group behavior. ‘Nature is a system in which everything is connected,’ says Studio DRIFT’s co-founder Ralph Nauta. ‘By bringing Shylight and Meadow together, the individual becomes part of a larger collective movement. Shy Society Palazzo makes this connection visible, reminding us that we are not separate from nature, but part of it.’

nature becomes choreography through movement and light

The installation by Studio DRIFT takes its cue from nyctinasty, the natural process through which certain flowers open and close. Its sculptural elements unfold and retract overhead throughout the day, producing a slow sequence of expansions and contractions. Light becomes part of this movement, making the suspended forms visible against the scale of the Palazzo lobby.

The distinction between the two works by the Amsterdam-based artist duo is central to the installation. Shylight focuses on the behavior of individual forms, while Meadow considers what happens when multiple elements operate as a collective. Together, they turn a simple botanical rhythm into a spatial proposition about individuality, coordination, and interdependence.

an hourly performance connects the sculptures to the body

For most of the day, Shy Society Palazzo moves through a continuous, relatively calm sequence. Once every hour, however, the sculptures enter a fully choreographed performance accompanied by music. According to the studio, the score is structured around rhythms associated with the human body, including breathing, heartbeat, and the nervous system.

Visitors encounter a work whose appearance changes over time, making duration part of the experience. The choreography also creates a parallel between biological and technological systems. Flowers respond to environmental cycles, while these sculptures follow programmed sequences that simulate a similarly organic sense of rhythm.
