GARZA TRANSLATES BYREDO FRAGRANCES INTO SPATIAL INSTALLATION

Designed by Mexican creator Leonardo Garza for BYREDO’s official launch in Mexico, Matter / Memory is an interactive spatial installation that translates five of the brand’s signature fragrances into physical materials, tactile movement, reflection, and acoustic soundscapes. Moving away from conventional visual representations of scent, the design approaches each fragrance as a distinct memory, reinterpreting its sensory notes through raw, tactile mediums and structured spatial experiences.

movable STEEL SPHERES float ACROSS CURVED GLASS FRAGMENTS

The installation by GARZA Studio consists of five curved fragments, each containing a different material composition beneath a transparent surface. Thousands of stainless steel spheres form a movable curtain across the installation, inviting visitors to interact by shifting the spheres to gradually reveal the materials beneath. As the spheres move, their interaction generates a subtle metallic soundscape, introducing an additional sensory dimension to the experience. Through movement and interaction, Matter / Memory invites visitors to discover the installation gradually, exploring the relationship between what is concealed and what is revealed.

RAW MATERIALS AND ATMOSPHERIC FOG ENCLOSE FIVE COMPOSITIONS

Each fragment interprets a different BYREDO fragrance through material: Gypsy Water through charcoal and ash, Rose of No Man’s Land through fractured glass, Mojave Ghost through mineral dust, Bal d’Afrique through red ochre earth, and Blanche through folded white textile. A low veil of fog surrounds the installation, creating an atmospheric landscape in which light, reflection, and material continuously shift. The project reflects GARZA’s ongoing interest in creating encounters between art and design, exploring new forms of expression across objects, furniture, and spatial installations.
