Mariko Mori: All That Shines
Visitors can enter Mariko Mori‘s Wave UFO, an interactive work that incorporates brainwave feedback, as part of All That Shines at Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum. Developed between 1999 and 2002, the large, futuristic installation connects neurological activity with visual experience. It appears in a retrospective of approximately 40 works spanning more than three decades of the Japanese artist’s practice.
The exhibition begins with Mori’s early performance-based photography and science-fiction-inspired imagery, including her experiments with cyborg identities in the 1990s. Later works turn toward Buddhist concepts of consciousness and questions about the cosmos, using sculpture and technology to approach subjects that resist direct representation. Together, the installations and moving-image works trace Mori’s changing ideas about the relationship between human perception and technological experience.
