bruce munro lights up the cheekwood botanical garden & museum of art with an exhibition which opens tonight, may 14th, 2013. ten of the british artist’s works–large-scale outdoor and indoor lighting installations, as well as indoor sculptures–take over the nashville, tenessee venue transforming the 55-acre site into an enchanting, illuminated landscape.

in this, his second solo showcase in the US (his work first debuted in 2012 with ‘light’ at longwood gardens in kennett square, pennsylvania), he reveals four new works which have never before been seen in the US, including ‘light reservation’ and ‘fagin’s urchins’.

‘during my first visit to cheekwood earlier in the year, I had a visceral reaction to the scale and positioning of the estate’s buildings. they are at one with the landscape, breeding a sense of understated balance and harmony that truly inspired meand undoubtedly permeates the visitor experience,’ said munro. ‘this is the most perfect place to exhibit because it provides a variety of opportunities to respond to – each space varies in both scale and topographical character. in addition, cheekwood’s world class exhibition galleries are a veritable jewel in its crown. I feel lucky and privileged to install my work at this prestigious and beautiful estate.’

‘light reservation’ is an arrangement of 10 teepee-like formations. each one is made from a composition of fluourescent lighting tubes,the individual structures illuminated by a different color.
