developed as part of a week-long workshop with ECAL’s professor antoine boudin, third year design students were asked to conceive lightweight objects with propulsion sails. presented at ‘arundo e estrambord’ exhibition at the espace d’art le moulin, the results consist of small hybrid small crafts, bridging typologies between toy and sculpture; figuratively showcased as innovative concepts.
participants include: sylvain aebischer, zoé blanchard, paolo paoluzzo, massao combeau, alice spieser, claudio sprugasci, thibault dussex, sasha landolt, yann mathys, jérôme chapuis, alexia pache and joël salamin.

‘triforce’ by thibault dussex, sasha landolt, yann mathys
designed for rear wind, triforce is based on the hovercraft principle: the sail accelerates part of the wind which is blown under the hull to reduce friction with the water.

‘néo II’ by christian ferrara, lucie jeanneret, mugi yamamoto
influenced by water striders, néo II stands out through the small area touching the water; built for maximum lightness and fast, precision sailing.

‘wind-Y’ by jérôme chapuis, alexia pache, joël salamin
‘we opted for a y-shaped architecture to which six adjustable wings are added. this enables the boat to easily adjust to rear wind, crosswind or close-hauled sailing.’
