fukuoka is developing rapidly, and is keeping the environment and sustainability in the forefront of its planning. the city’s recycling ‘office of wickerwork’ designed by local japanese architecture firm SUEP./hirokazu suemitsu+yoko suemitsu, is in alignment with those principles. natural light and energy, and recycled materials are used throughout their plan. the roof and exterior are created from translucent materials, finished with a storefront facade at the ground level. thus ample daylight can flow into the space during work hours. to prevent heat gain and harsh glare, recycled cedar strips are woven in the pattern of traditional bamboo folk craft, creating a sun shading and light diffusing finish. to maintain the interior temperature, a translucent insulation is installed under the roof, and polycarbonate glazing is used in the exterior walls.
