marc levinson, john maurlello, doug ponciano and richart ruddle founded protos eyewear in 2011, with the intention of developing a line of consumer-grade 3D printed sunglasses that are tailor made to fit the customer.
employing 3D printing technologies–laser sintering, 3D scanning and parametric 3D modelling–protos eyewear is able to provide individuals with a pair of specs that are fabricated based on the specific facial measurements and dimensions of the individual, something which is of course not possible with mass manufactured products. the layering process used to create each piece of eyewear allows for a range of styles (protos will eventually offer 24 different models), from the more reserved ‘howard’, to the funky, pixelated design of ‘hal’.
the company is using 3D printing to prove that the process can be harnessed as a viable manufacturing solution, rather than solely as a prototyping tool for which its primary application at the moment. protos 3D printed eyewear is currently seeking funding to realize their products.
