‘basil chair’, designed by mr smith studio for calligaris furniture company

‘basil chair’, designed by milan-based mr smith studio for the italian manufacturer calligaris, draws its form from the structural morphology of a basil leaf. in the chair, the central rib serves as not only ornamental but also structural purpose.

the chair is composed of restilon, a fully recyclable thermoplastic polymer composed of 35% recycled materials. the composite was selected for its structural properties, which allow for a more rigid exterior layer and a more flexible inner core, in the injection molded piece. models are produced with either wooden or metal legs.

‘basil chair’ was introduced during milan design week 2011.
