art HK 11: hong kong international art fair

organized by the hong kong design centre, the 2011 edition of art HK hong kong international art fair opens its doors thursday, may 26th until sunday, may 29th 2011. since its inception in 2008, the event has established itself as one of the most extensive showcases of modern and contemporary art in asia. more than 260 galleries from 38 countries will gather at the hong kong convention and exhibition centre representing a diverse selection of works by international artists.

new to the fair this year is ‘art futures’, an art HK feature which showcases emerging talent represented by galleries established in or after 2006. sponsored by lane crawford, 20sqm and 30 sqm spaces will present one or two gallery artists who must be aged 35 or less at the time of application.

the fair also includes many off-site exhibitions that will still be on show past the duration of art HK 2011 such as ‘no lab’ a multimedia exhibition in which guangzhou native cao fei joins forces with hong kong-based studio MAP office to create a site-specific installation and experience via film and the online virtual community, recalling the natural disaster of hurricane katrina on show at SCAD gallery hong kong from may 27th to august 12th, 2011.

shanghai and new york-based artist zhang huan exhibits his 15 ton ‘three heads six arms’ within the exterior plaza of the 1881 heritage mall until june 30th, 2011.

grotto fine art presents ‘game theory’ an exhibition of new works by hong kong-based artist halley cheng. for this series, cheng mixes imagery from old paintings, inserting traditional chinese literati sentiment into compositions with a contemporary approach, combining these protagonists with images with video game motifs and symbols. the show runs until may 28th, 2011.
