japanese designer nendo has realized a three-piece dessert cutlery set called ‘sekki’ in collaboration with kobayashi kogyo, a metalwork firm in japan renowned for their polishing technique. the spoon, fork and knife have an asymmetrical, warped silhouette alluding to the irregular contours of flint artifacts found from the prehistoric era. with their thickness and weight suggesting the solidity of stone, the kitchenware collection enforces the reference of a being a hand-carved primitive tool. each metal sheet is flattened seven times, rather than the usual one, until the base has a continuous, satin appearance. concave areas are sandblasted for a matte finish, while the remainder of the visible material is polished to a smooth mirror-like state. the execution of the manifold process, and the aesthetically appealing result, is a testament to the metal cutlery firm’s sensibility, skill and handwork.
