divided into two different functions, ‘tapered house’ by hong-kong based index architecture consists of a gallery dedicated solely to bruce lee memorabilia and also a vacation house. located on a trapezoidal site in shunde, china the 670 sqm volume gently tapers from west to east. the display area is perched over a small cliff on the building’s south side, where there is a sharp drop in the terrain. the items featured in the collection – especially the first edition movie poster are all very sensitive to natural lights. window openings are carefully positioned to filter appropriate levels of light through and also frame distant views beyond. sitting adjacent to to the gallery are the living quarters – the master bedroom overlooks a double height space that opens out directly onto the garden. the elongated mass is in contrast to the openness of the garden, enhancing its sense of enclosure and privacy. the exterior is constructed with raw far-faced concrete reflecting bruce lee’s fundamental belief in, ‘being no limit is the limit, being shapeless is the shape’.
