copenhagen based practice holm architecture office (HOA) has sent us images of their latest project, a competition proposal for ‘pulsen community center’ in balling, denmark. the work, which is strongly connected to the surrounding natural environment, was created in collaboration with niklas thormark, will kemper and tobias lindqvist-ottosson.
plentiful outdoor space allows for multiple activities to simultaneously take place
looking to integrate a variety of health and sports-oriented facilities under one roof, the design boasts a combination of baths, fitness areas, doctor’s offices and public gathering spaces. the complex – a low and circular form – seeks to create a unique new building type that promotes interaction and creativity among the citizens of balling.
sports fields and tracks
the building is structured around a central space that allows for entry from two main access points,
connecting the existing pedestrian routes in the area. this new hub serves as an informal community area
and connects directly to all of the buildings facilities.
fully glazed walls allow visitors to remain connected to the surrounding natural environment
an outdoor park surrounds and interacts with the complex, offering fields and venues for both winter and
summer sports. a multi-purpose hall serves as a site for performances and classes, making the facility a new
pivot point for engagement and cross-polination within the city.

jens holm, founder of HOA, explains: ‘with pulsen we propose a building whose components mimic the idea of the traditional town square. a central gathering space connects all aspects of the building, maximizing interaction of people and ideas.’
