the first year students of london’s barlett school of architecture have once again made a series of films to celebrate and document their diverse, studio-based year. now in its third generation (see here, here and here), the initiative seeks to catalogue the evolution of each interlaced workshop, culminating in a popular year end exhibition.

developed in four phases the 2010-2011 program examined the abstract notion of time and space. approached as an experiential and experimental method of education, the physical manifestations respond to both their surroundings, and a larger social, political and cultural context.

the first project, entitled ‘fragements’ was intended to slowly immerse students into the rigorous and craft-heavy program. conceived as personal interactive objects, the task allowed each individual to create a solution for adjustment in their new and unfamiliar environment.

emphasizing the spatial and emotional qualities of given rooms, the second project begins as an exploration of both the

mansion and the ghost of sir john soane. whimsical and conceptual, the undertaking sees the realization of six free-standing

structures scattered around sir john’s pitzhanger manor in ealing, west london.

this was followed by a trip to porto, portugal where the students were encouraged to connect and capture a specific, fleeting moment. documenting mundane routines through observation and technical drawings, the group spent a majority of the trip amalgamated into the lifestyle of the locals.

the rest of the year focused on the creation of community in south london’s vauxhall district. following the theme of ‘vauxhall’s arch’, the exercise is a hybrid of the previous three phases, where students applied the theoretical and practical knowledge gained throughout the year.
