lux craft lighting pavilion at origin craft fair

‘lux craft’, a new exhibition space for lighting design at london’s origin contemporary craft fair in september, will feature the works of ten designers above, ‘sonumbra de vincy’, a previous installation by london-based art and design studio loop.pH, that will exhibit a similar design at this year’s lux craft event

the origin contemporary craft fair in london this september will feature lux craft, a new platform for lighting installations. defining ‘lux’ as the measure of the light intensity as perceived by the human eye, the crafts council established this focused exhibition in response to origin’s new audience of architects and interior designers in town for the london design festival.

centrally located within the origin pavilion, the micro-show will showcase the works of ten selected designers: ontwerpduo, sarah blood, johannes hermann, jos kranen of kranen/gille, rachel wingfield of loop.pH, richard wheater, hsiao-chi tsai & kimiya yoshikawa, niamh barry, jeremy cole, and kirsti taivioli.

‘lux craft’ will be on display on old spitalfields market from september 22-28, 2011.

‘light forest’ by ontwerpduo image by joost van den burg  

nathan wiernik and tienke beunders of eindhoven-based studio ontwerpduo will install a custom fixture composed with their ‘light forest’ system. with a pipe-like structure, the design consists of various connecting parts which can be adapted to different spaces.

frankfurt-based designer johannes hermann will create a new series of pendant lights, titled ‘nicolas’. see designboom’s previous coverage of his storm forms here.

’00:00.00′, lux craft proposal by dutch designer jos kranen

dutch designer jos kranen of kranen/gille has proposed to create an installation titled ’00:00.00′ for lux craft. the work features energy-saving bulbs which are cast in a fully-closed plaster spheres: these shells must be cracked in order for the light to be accessed, making a destructive action necessary to start each lamp’s new life.

‘blooming propeller’ by hsiao-chi tsai and kimiya yoshikawa image by kimiya yoshikawa

japanese designers hsiao-chi tsai and kimiya yoshikawa have proposed a site-specific lighting sculpture based on their recent work, ‘blooming propeller’. developed for visual impact at every angle, the piece resembles an oversized flower. it is to be composed of intricate organic shapes, made out of contrasting shiny florescent perspex and matte neoprene, with UV paints transforming its appearance from day to night.

‘illusia’, lux craft proposal by kirsti taiviola

finnish designer kirsti taiviola will display ‘illusia’: this pendant lamp features a fine, almost invisible texture on a handblown glass ball hidden in the lampshade, which creates a blossom-shaped projection of reflections on surfaces below. with three different levels of light intensity, the visibility of the reflection can be adjusted so the lamp can serve both decorative and illuminating functions.
