'I believe architecture is akin to something like a framework, which subsumes the complexities and richness of this ever-changing world, and assimilates what is not yet comprehensible.' - sou fujimoto

the practice of sou fujimoto over the course of the last years has evolved, reaching new and diverse heights. his portfolio has expanded to encompass a range of projects located across the globe that are each unique to their cultural context–varying from small scale residential builds throughout japan, to a youth hostel in taiwan, a waterfront center in serbia and most recently completed, the 2013 serpentine gallery pavilion in the UK, just to name a few.

though fujimoto maintains a common thematic thread throughout his works, each of his built structures is a distinct piece of architecture, that does not only evolve from the synthesis of numerous forms through study models, but from the roots of his ideas and thoughts.

for the young japanese architect, the synthesis of nature and architecture is key–whereby our natural environment’s complexity is injected into a man made sense of order (and vice versa), bringing forth a new definition of space that responds to our changing times. ‘between nature and architecture’ at GA gallery in japan, exhibited a myriad of models that depict fragments of fujimoto’s grander schemes, offering a first-hand look at how he himself works through each project during tokyo designers week 2013.
