each year the CIAV, centre international d’art of meisenthal in france produces a glass blown christmas ornament. the latest creation is ‘sylvestre’, a mountain super-hero figure by studio brichetziegler. based on a long tradition, the history of meisenthal’s decorative baubles dates back to 1858 when a drought deprived the growing of fir trees. a glass-blower of goetzenbruck tried to compensate for this tragedy by producing round pieces that could be hung along the branches. this began a tradition, which has since been adopted by different cultures across the globe. ‘sylvestre’ references an evening star, traversing the sky he flies through snowy mist, over the top of trees and dives into the dark fir forest. from the edge of the woods to the living-room, he adorns the christmas tree with a happy grin.
