nini andrade silva inserts tree trunk in beautique hotels figueira

a large sculptural tree trunk assumes a central position in the ‘beautique hotel figueira’ by lisbon-based studio nini andrade silva, organically making its way up the eight floors. influenced by the building’s location on the ‘figueira plaza’ in the heart of lisbon, which once hosted a market with leafy fig trees, a strong metamorphosis between the site’s history and nature is formed. changing in density from the ‘roots’ to the ‘canopy’, the sculpture’s curvy proportions also add a level of structural stability to the new interior. evoking a sense of mystery, the foliage gains body and color as one wanders through the hotel – the surrounding architectural elements rise up around the fig tree, depositing the little, the great, the low and the high, the deep, and the colorful throughout the off-shooting spaces.
