portuguese architects nuno ladeiro and marco martins have inserted a mixed-use residential building into the urban core of vila nova de tazem, a small country town near serra da estrela in the north of portugal. the area is characterized by a dense fabric with many two to three storey high structures. the geometry of the cubed form and parallelepiped façade punctuations were influenced by surrounding configurations, the boundaries of the land and existing built environment. wanting to optimize the available commercial and residential space, fifteen apartments with various layouts were incorporated into the mass, served by three completely independent vertical circulation cores. generously sized living areas were emphasized to encourage social interaction and offer views towards serra da estrela, the highest mountain range in portugual. the use of black and white stones punctured along the building’s exterior treatment seeks to embody the spirit of the place.
