the ‘vine hair salon’ by japanese studio sides core is based on the concept of a vine that gradually takes shape throughout the space. the site is located in a spacious room, bigger than what was necessary to accommodate the owner’s client base and the brief was for an atmosphere that enabled people to spend time there, to read a book for example as well as receive a hair cut. wanting to make connections a priority, the roof acts as the natural form of a plant, eventually weaving itself across the interior. beneath the overhead structure, there is both a feeling of openness associated with being outdoors and also a sense of comfort. by running the pipes along the ceiling in an arch shape, and wrapping the lighting fixtures into an organic structure, it was possible to freely change their location and height as necessary. the arches evoke the feeling that the ceiling is floating upward, and that the entire salon is protected by a strong element. the seats are spaced far apart, with each one separated by a bookshelf, blocking the views between them.
