studio ljung & ljung (martin ljung and greta ljung) present their ‘POP’ bamboo lampshades within the greenhouse program of the 2014 stockholm furniture & light fair.

stemming from the swedish duo’s desire to work in more traditional ways – applying these techniques in a contemporary context of production – the lighting pieces evolved during their travels to mae tola in the mountains of northern thailand, where they participated in a workshop conducted by sop moei arts, based in chiang mai that focused on local craft methods.

the ‘POP’ lampshades are designed as modules which can be combined in various ways, offering a number of different forms, that also making them easier to transport. each one is hand-made from bamboo and metal. once completed, they are placed over an open fire, smoking the bamboo in order to rid the wood from any pests, while also acting as a preservation process. in turn the open flame darkens the wood, to create a bolder aesthetic.
