fram build mimics upturned viking boat in riverside clubhouse

the ‘riverside clubhouse’ designed by alexey chikovsky and emission-zero architects is located near to the medieval town center of stratford-upon-avon in the UK, famous for being the birthplace of william shakespeare. serving as a bar, restaurant and conference facility, the angular form was based on the image of an upturned hull of a viking boat, as well as profiles of gothic roof pitches. the countryside retreat was built using handmade, raw timber in a traditional norwegian log-shell technique. the construction process was dealt with in two parts – the wooden pieces were manufactured in russia and then delivered and assembled on site in the UK by the russian-english company fram.

the clubhouse is raised on top of a steel structure to protect it from floods

situated in an area susceptible to floods, the volume is raised on top of a pier-like steel structure, which additionally helps to ensure passive cooling and natural ventilation. the sustainable development consists of organic rough timber, zinc metal and glass with carpentry joints insulated by hemp jute. the simple material palette blends the clubhouse in with its countryside environment and local architecture.
