german studio burkhard architekten has completed a wine pressing house for the ‘bietighöfer winery’ located in the middle of mühlhofen village in germany. the building’s bold geometric form stand outs against its traditional surroundings, heightened by the use of raw cement as its main material. the project reflects the philosophy of the wine makers, who wanted to keep the volume simple and functional, while combining a sense of individuality and expression.

streetview showing the contrast in architectural styles
in order to retain as much free space as possible, the new pressing hall was built adjoining the existing tank store. the façade of this structure was covered with weathering corten steel, offering a strong contrast against the light concrete. the angular roof-line forms a dynamic connection between the new addition and the traditional form of the winery and village.

a band of windows was integrated along the top to take advantage of natural light, while on the ground level a narrow line of glazing runs around the corner to allow views into the pressing hall from the terrace. the two doors and industrial entranceway were purposefully kept plain and understated.
