tadao ando architecture exhibition duvetica store and showroom, milan, italy on now through april 22, 2012

ten museum buildings designed by japanese architect tadao ando are currently on display in his recently completed ‘duvetica store and showroom’, a retail space in milan, italy. constructed in europe and japan, the projects represent a time period beginning in the 1990s and leading up to 2010, including just unveiled and opened locations. curated by the architect himself, the collection will detail the punta della dogana contemporary art centre and palazzo grassi in venice as well as the benesse house museum/oval, lee ufan museum and chichu art museum in naoshima, japan. the 220 square meter interior will feature a collection of drawings, models, videos and photographs documenting each work.

set within the rolling hills of bad kreuznach, germany, the ‘stone sculpture museum’ exhibits the work of german artists wolfgang kubach and anna maria kubach-wilmsen. a restored vernacular barn has been moved to the site and converted into the main gallery of the center, removing an exterior wall and replacing it with a glass facade supported by a contemporary timber framework, introducing streams of natural daylight into the gallery. original wooden beams and structural components of the gable roof have been maintained and exposed, creating a dramatic double-story space.

attached to the focal building, concrete walls enclose outdoor courtyards while openings frame views into the encompassing agricultural landscape. sculptures are featured amongst a setting of water gardens and stone gravel.
