takeshi hamada: house K

recently completed by japanese architect takeshi hamada of hakada design, ‘house K’ is a dwelling located in the residential area of kadoma city, within in the osaka perfecture of japan. each of the rooms in this dwelling border a light well which spans vertically to connect all three levels allowing air to circulate throughout the interior. expressed along the side elevation as a pattern of rectangular facade penetrations, these openings doubly serve to screen inward views from close neighbors.

daylight streams into the interior and continues through the glass doors to divide rooms. a unified kitchen, dining and living area creates a flexible configuration which may be adjusted as needed, maximizing the footprint upon the small plot of land. screened with the perimeter walls of the cubic enclosure, an open-air balcony is accessible from the first and second floors, allowing inhabitants to peak out and oversee the surroundings.
