‘momentum’ vase collection, by jacobo munoz all images courtesy of jacobo munoz

mexican designer, jacobo munoz, has developed a series of vases that contrasts the liberty and captivity of the flowers. the vase is made in two parts, blown glass and metal disks. the individual containers where formed is by the skill of a blower, and the metal discs were cut with hi-technology. the portion created out of glass has no stable base, and without the ring, the flower vases cannot function. the round surface area provokes a turning motion that is reminiscent of the natural movement of wild flowers, which move when wind passes through them. entitled ‘momentum’, the collection comprises several shapes that adapt to the needs of different plants. it is defined, in physics, as the fundamental quantity that characterizes movement of any object.

the intent of the ‘momentum’ flower vases is to reconstruct the movement that the flowers will no longer posses once they are cut to be placed inside. the vessels reflect the contrast between freedom and captivity. freedom is movement that may be created artificially by swaying the object over its own axis; captivity is the obstruction of a shackle (the disk) that generates the illusion of freedom but reminds that the flowers are condemned to die.
