felippe moraes makes large geometric drawings using pendular movement
the brazilian artist exposes hidden and beautiful patterns of the universe composed of sand and paint.
felippe moraes’ work for the last four years has been dedicated to discovering the hidden and sometimes beautiful patterns secluded from the visible and tangible world written within the universe. the artist’s intent is to reveal these unforeseen designs in an attempt to understand the surrounding cosmos. following this philosophy, moraes presents ‘order’ at baró galeria in são paulo, a collection of mathematical drawings that have been created using sand and paint.

the center of the space is marked by a large geometric composition of granules scattered upon the surface of the floor. moraes made the piece by installing a glass pendulum within the ceiling that has the ability to sway freely through the air. after pulling the structure away from its focal point, the artist released the object in a way that developed circular motions while releasing mineral particles below. the natural physics of the act have resulted in a spirograph-like texture of swirls and loops that decrease in size as they flow back towards the suspended fixture.

using the same process, the artist has created a series of four graphics with white household paint on black paper that are also shown in the exhibition. similar to the installation, these drawings reveal a pattern that is woven into the fabric of the matter, creating in the viewer a sense of familiarity and awe towards the natural perfection of the images.
