international practice HOK has been selected to design the new university at buffalo (UB) school of medicine and biomedical sciences on its downtown campus, united states. the building will be located at the center of the region’s emerging bio-sciences corridor. it will be a transit-oriented institution which will anchor a mixed-use district on the grounds, bringing 1200 students, faculty and staff to the urban core. the goal is to foster collaboration and interdisciplinary care, creating connections that allow academics, researchers and clinicians to move easily from classroom to bedside to lab.

the proposed 375 million USD medical school, funded by NYSUNY 2020 legislation, is a key component of UB’s 2020 plan for academic excellence, which is intended to benefit students, faculty, staff and the western new york community. reflecting sustainability and climate-impact reduction goals, HOK will develop standards targeting LEED gold certification. the facility will become a catalyst for further development in the downtown core and support the convergence of technology and research that will transform the practice of medicine. the groundbreaking for the institution is scheduled for the fall of 2013 and construction is expected to be completed in 2016.
