working alongside the municipality of copenhagen, local architecture firm dissing+weitling designed ‘cykelslangen‘, an elevated bike ramp that cuts across the city harbour, taking cyclists from a pedestrian congested part of town; kalvebod brygge over to island brygge. the long bridge takes off from havneholmen and continues in a winding course along fisketorvet towards the shopping center’s main entrance, while offering enough space for quicker cyclists to pass slower cargo bicycles. the latest sustainable initiative in the danish capital will allow pedestrians to use the entire wharf while avoiding collisions with those on two wheels, also providing cyclists with a route for efficiently passing through the area, while experiencing a unique and exciting view.

the elevated bike route measures 13 feet wide and has two lanes
‘the area around fisketorvet shopping center is characterized by a particular problem, there are two distinctive groups of users, each with conflicting interests, cyclists and pedestrians’, says D+W. ‘the cyclists need to get easily from kalvebod brygge over to island brygge. they will use the connection daily and want an easy and safe passage through the area. this gets in conflict with the many pedestrians using either fisketorvet shopping center or just staying in the public bath area.’

the ramp will provide a unique harbour outlook during sunny days and shelter during rainy days

the long ramp has been designed completely separate cyclists from pedestrians
