LENS°ASS architecten: valerie traan

belgian practice LENS°ASS architecten has completed ‘valerie traan‘, a gallery and dwelling in antwerp, belgium. the space consists of a series of outdoor and indoor areas which feature products by designers and artists, blurring the lines between the two disciplines. the glass partition faces onto a patio which is accessed through two large doors. the detail allows for uninterrupted views to the garden developed by ssa/xx (kris coremans and guy châtel), as well as natural light to penetrate the interior. coremans and châtel’s courtyard consists of a cement platform which rests on a pebble filled square is slightly raised with projecting bench providing visitors a resting spot for contemplation.

the public and semi-private zones are separated via a subtle glass partition and open kitchen. the plywood cabinets, stainless steel surfaces and cement flooring create a visual transition between the modern gallery and the residence which features rustic and traditional elements. circulation to the other rooms is found through a linear hallway which leads directly into dining area and living space with original brick herringbone tiling.

the master bedroom and ensuite are located on the upper floor which is accessed through a single stairway through the gallery. the bathroom features an open black shower with a partial cement wall detailed white cabinets adhered to different levels on the walls. the walk-in-closet is linked to the sleeping quarters which is painted in dark neutral tones with yellow accents sprinkled within the small alcove areas.
