german practice k_m architektur have completed the ‘farm house in obstgarten’, a residence within a farmstead in langenargen, germany. encompassed by an orchard, the one-storey structure is lifted off the ground, appearing to float above the lawn and overlook the perpendicular rows of agricultural plantings. spanning the linear footprint, the continuous flat roof wraps the north half of the dwelling and bends into the ground plane, opening the elongated and glass-enclosed south elevation to the landscape. inhabitants approach the copper-clad building from the nearby farm complex, ascending zigzagged concrete steps and passing into an outdoor foyer entirely surfaced with wood planks.
deep overhangs along the glazed exterior form a sheltered veranda to protect the interior from solar gain during summer. a photovoltaic system on a nearby building energizes the home while a pipeline leading from the another warms the home during winter with firewood. a wood-fueled stove in the living room warms the interior.
