ordinarily a ‘ridge’ in a carpet would immediately be pulled straight or be stood on to regain its flat purpose. but not in the mind of alessandro isola. instead, imperfection is magnified until the deformations are large enough to offer supportive curves that develop a distinctly different seating structure, named the ‘stumble upon sofa’.

the sofa presents itself as a natural but alien deformation within the setting of a living room
the concept follows the same creative curiosity and desire for ‘design disorder’ that conceived the ‘stumble upon rug‘, with its turned up corner that folds to a coffee table, but on a larger scale. this accentuation of normally unwanted undulations makes for playful visual twists, that in the case of the furnishing, offer plentiful arrangements in a creatively uncompromising way.

Stumble upon Sofa
comfort is created beneath the edges by the addition of padding to the carpet area that flows over the carbon fiber supportive core. in turn, this foundation presents its own practical surprise, by doubling up as book or display shelving that can be viewed at the larger opening of the couch. the changing height and curvature of the form along its length provides upright seating positions at one end and informal lounging at the other.
