nendo‘s collaboration with coca-cola sees the upcycling of the soft drink manufacturer’s classic contour bottle, in the form of glass blown tableware. the drinking vessel was designed by earl r. dean in the early 1900s and has become synonymous with the coca-cola brand ever since, being collected, washed and recycled to be used over and over again. now, nendo has created ‘bottleware’ as a means of bringing focus to the design piece on another level. debuting at designtide tokyo 2012, they have conceived a series of five dishes and bowls which have been produced using recycled coca-cola bottles. with this project, the japanese studio wanted to retain the aesthetic characteristics which make the original piece so unique. the greenish-colored hue of the glass has been maintained, whereby the bottoms of each dish features the ring of dimples – visible on the normal bottle to avoid slipping – and is stamped with the brand’s logo. ‘bottleware’ is produced by glassblowers in the aomori prefecture of japan.
