‘copy/pour’ is a creation device by defact studio that responds directly to the environment it’s used in. the system is composed of a rack and pinion acting as a press, at the end of which is a fastened matrix. the mechanic components are left bare, creating a visible contrast between the industrial machine and the earth-like quality of the artifacts it creates

to use the device; mix plaster and water to create a paste, then spread it into an indented mound of earth of your choosing. activate ‘copy/pour’ until it presses the chosen object/mold firmly against the plaster. after waiting for a short while, reversing the crank will show a spontaneous, earthen-ware. the same visible contrast between the machine and soil, is repeated in the finished product. the piece will have a surface reflecting whatever object was used–smooth, wavy, ridged, bumpy, etc–and the bottom will show the textured, porous quality of the dirt. ‘copy/pour’ is an effort to desacralize industrial ideas, encouraging non-professional processes rather than serially produced standardization
