pepon is a ceramic vase that was shaped around a calabash (pepon).
the  bottom is straightened by hand as the vase is being stabilised,
so all  vases have different shapes. varying enamels determine the look of  each vase.

this vase consists of layers of needlefelt that have been cut into
different sized discs with water jets and then layered (115 layers).
a glass cylinder was placed in the middle.
needlefelt is made from leftover fibers that have been mechanically
intertwined with needles and is widely used as an insulating and
springy underlayer for carpets. existing materials are used in a
totally new and diferent way for this design. the vase is named after
the pancake rocks nature preserve in new zealand, a rock in the sea
that looks like a giant stack of pancakes.

yksi was invited to join the project dutch souvenirs by the european ceramics work center in den bosch.
tourists can break a piece off an object to take home with them. whereas archeologists collect
bits and pieces of pots and vases to reconstruct the past, the visitors assure the spreading
of fragments of traditional holland around the world. the object is a modern vase shape with
prepared fracture lines, so the pieces break easily and uniformly. the vase will remain an
interesting object until the bottom is reached.

a caterpillar motif on the outside and notches on the inside refer to the piece of holland vase.
an amount of casting clay poured in the same mould every time makes for a logical progress
in height. from high vase to the end result as a bowl. produced by haans bv.
