marble off-cuts define lucia massari’s unique furniture collection
lucia massari explores the possibility of using high-quality marble off-cuts to create one-of-a-kind furniture pieces. working together with mandruzzato marmi & graniti, a marble cutting manufacturer based near vicenza, italy, the italian designer utilizes scraps of carrara marble and onyx, that would otherwise be ground into gravel by the industry, as her medium of choice to create a bench, lamp, table and chopping board.

designers typically like to have full control of all aspects of their development process, but as massari tells designboom, this way of working has seen her let go and put her trust in the hands of the people at mantruzzato. her selected material comes from the company’s commissions, such as custom kitchen counters, sinks, or gravestones. what massari does is give mandurzzato drawings of what she wants, and indicates what colors she would like to use for a particular piece, and then it is up to the manufacturer to interpret her concept and make it into a reality. she has no real ‘hands on involvement’ in her work’s physical creation.

a combination of stone off-cuts forms the geometric ‘marbleabilia’ lamp
presented at vienna design week 2015, massari’s ‘marbleabilia’ collection of furniture expresses the inherent qualities of marble, its texture and color; and showcases the unpredictable design process of using the stone leftovers as they become available, resulting in a unique family of pieces whose appearance depends on the type of stone that is available.
