offering tranquility and a peaceful respite outside a hospital environment, a new hotel designed by danish architectural firm 3XN facilitates self-sufficient patients who live far away a place to stay which is connected to examination and treatment. the scheme is part of copenhagen’s rigshospitalet hospital, where the 7,400 sqm building intends to be a supportive and comfortable setting for patients, as well as an efficient work environment for the administrative staff.
there will be a new treatment building, ‘the north wing’, which will be completed in 2018
‘we designed the building with these open atria to offer good visual contact, instead of the closed corridors usually associated with hospitals,’ comments kim herforth nielsen, 3XN creative director and founder. ‘in addition, we ensured that ample daylight and warm materials and colors create a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere, which serves as a comforting environment during a difficult period.’
each room has access to a private balcony
architecturally, the patient hotel building is composed as two stacked volumes, forming a juxtaposed ‘VS’ shape. the distinctive form establishes a clear visual separation between the two programmatic functions: the accommodation and hospital administration. featuring 74 rooms spread over three floors, each space has access to a private balcony overlooking the surrounding, green landscape. on the exterior, the façade has been horizontally clad with a light natural stone, instilling a strong character and at the same time creating shade. alongside the hotel, a parking garage – defined by twisted aluminum lamellas on its façade – sits on the border of copenhagen’s biggest recreational park fælledparken.
