the ‘journey’ home, by honeyman + smith architects, derives its name from the way it is to be experienced. as inhabitants walk through the residence, the scheme slowly reveals its diverse elements, mimicking in a sense the site’s own gentle slope. located in shoreham, on mornington peninsula, australia, the modest home is that of a cultivator who grows pinot noir and chardonnay grapes in the surrounding vineyards.

two forms, set at 90 degrees to one another, compose the structure. the upper half marks the beginning of the ‘journey’, and captures expansive views to the north, east, and west. a single stairwell connects the top to its lower counterpart. outside, honeyman + smith composed an ordered landscape plan, with a hierarchy of elements that harmonize indigenous ground cover with various trees and shrubbery.

lightweight construction techniques were utilized, and are complemented by heavy flooring in the form of reclaimed stone, brick, and concrete. materials are predominately locally sourced with a color palette akin to convention within the calm coastal village. passive heating and cooling were considered and are achieved through strategic window and door placement, and the ability to shutter the upper or lower building at any time.
