commissioned by nilufar gallery, maarten de ceulaer’s ‘sundial chandelier’ consists of seven aluminium disks held together by a single iron rod which hover like planets in the universe. they spiral down to the end, expelling a spherical glow and a sense of motion and continuity, as the disks range in size growing smaller and larger. this gives the appearance of an upright spinning top paused in time, capturing a perfect circular loop. the central rod holds these plates together casting a sharp shadow in various directions as if illuminated by six different suns. maarten de ceulaer’s sundial chandelier is on show during milan design week 2016 as part of the ‘belgian matters’ exhibition at palazzo litta.
