venice architecture biennale: one of the many exhibits set inside the arsenale is ‘lightscapes’: a light-choreography installation conceived as a collaboration between transsolar and anja thierfelder. categorized between architecture and technical art, the series of intense and dynamic rays of light have been achieved through the manipulation of the room’s thermodynamic conditions.

by playing the interior’s humidity, temperature, stratification and air movement, transsolar and german architect anja thierfelder have brought the piercing shafts of light to life using technologies such as a high-pressure nozzle system which supplies the room with the required humidity. the usual source of crepuscular rays is sunlight, but since there are neither existing skylights, the light beams from twenty spotlights extend diagonally across the dark room, offering a dialogue with the symmetry and rhythm of the room’s columns. furthermore, the static light beams are experienced differently depending on where the installation is viewed in the room, with the dramatic play of light and dark drawing attention to a poem that has been engraved on the floor.
