TAAV arquitectos’ reconstruction of the non-existent proposal
reconstruction, when done thoroughly, has the ability to capture the essence of a building to the most minute physical details; yet memory remains allusive, destined to remain in the past. architecture, like humans, are witnesses to experiences, events, and the passing of time. the precision of van der rohe’s ‘german pavilion’ in barcelona can be mimicked, but the details of its origin — soberness, congruence of materials, lightness, cadafalch’s eight columns, furnishings, kolbe’s der morgen — are now only ghosts.

mexican firm TAAV arquitectos’ ‘reconstruction of the non-existent’ seeks to clarify the ‘german pavilion’s’ blurry memories, its ghosts, to provide a contemporary reinterpretation. a modular structure of steel bar delineates eight cores, forming an apparition of the form’s original columns. visitors’ movement allows for transformation of the static grid to occur, providing glimpses of the past through the present. present, and at the same time absent, all that remains is a reconstructed memory.
