arup engineers’ three-sided 57-storey skyscraper in mexico city
the ‘torre reforma’ is a latest addition to the skyline of mexico city. engineered by arup, the 57-storey mixed use skyscraper with three faces offers a new architectural model for concrete construction in seismically active locations.

pre-certified as a LEED platinum core and shell project, the building contains multiple water conservation systems

working with l. benjamin romano arquitects (LBR), arup has constructed an aesthetic structure that merges material and form. a pre-tensioned double-V hangers brace the glazed façade and simultaneously creates a recognized visual identity for the building. the resulting design features a surface that is free of honeycombing or flaws. the concrete was poured in increments of 70 cm, highlighting the subtle variations in color.

the column-free interior, allows for dramatic views over chapultepec park and the city
the circulation inside has been arranged at the apex of the triangle meanwhile, in conventional skyscrapers, vertical circulation is typically located in the central core of the building. this results in higher ceiling heights and a column-free interior, facilitating unobstructed views over the adjacent chapultepec park and the city from every level.

long-span pyramidal floor trusses allow plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems to be concealed within the

sited in an earthquake-prone zone, the engineering posed several challenges. the triangular plan of torre reforma causes the building to have an inherent tendency to twist when subjected to lateral loads and wind. arup’s solution will allow the building to withstand the full range of earthquake activity projected for a period of 2,500 years.
