kontra architecture unveils 'kolektifhouse', a shared office concept in istanbul

kontra architects has unveiled its shared office concept for kolektifhouse’s latest location in istanbul. with a total constructıon area of 2700 m2, encompassing a 1500 m2 entrance floor and a 1200 m2 mezzanine, the premises stand on the grounds of an old broderie factory. the building was structurally designed to accommodate the needs of different types of membership, providing 75 private offices as well as facilities for 150 nomad members.

constructed in a distinct industrial style, kontra architecture makes use of a combination of firebricks, raw iron, exposed concrete, OSB (oriented strand board), glass and wood. the original walls of firebricks and the iron joinery have been preserved to maintain the structure’s industrial past, these elements creating a common language of design for the offices inside. panel walls have been left blank to offer each separate corporate identity the opportunity to exhibit its own defining graphic arts, while office gardens punctuate the space, featuring wooden terraces, landscaped green areas and wedge-shaped stained glass awnings.

the interior is highlighted by conference rooms designed with a ‘green office’ approach, accentuated by graphics inspired by nature and carpets boasting a watercolor effect. the different designs of the six conference rooms accommodate corporate meetings and provide users with comfortable gathering areas that can accommodate a full range of creative concepts. the industrial aesthetic is visible throughout: plush leather sofas, bare bulbs, honeycomb and checkerboard metal ceilings and exposed brick combine to produce an atmosphere of warmth that is at times industrious and distinctly casual.

one of the most prominent spaces in kolektifhouse is the event hall, designed to feature wooden tiers to seat a large number of people, and a multi-level and high ceiling structure that serves to conceal mechanical systems. all of the furniture used in the kolektifhouse project has been specially designed and manufactured by kontra. the ‘office chair’, from kontra’s own collection, was used in the common office spaces and conference halls.
