artist geoffroy mottart reinvigorates the often overlooked, historic busts found in parks and public spaces across belgium with a floral touch. bronze and stone statues depicting the likes of leopold II, hermes and the goddess of bocq are adorned with quirky botanical beards and blossoming hairstyles. ‘this idea came to me because I realized that most people pass by these statues without paying attention to them,‘ the artist says.

leopold II
mottart’s ongoing project features the decoration of somewhat forgotten statues placed throughout public parks and places in belguim. vibrant blooms are carefully arranged to mimic the shape and silhouette of beards and hair, each composition giving the statue a colorful new persona. the sculptural depictions of these real and mythological figures are re-imagined through an ephemeral and elegant lens, bringing a touch of humor to everyday history. ‘by putting a floral note in places or on objects, spectators pay attention to my work and rediscover what surrounds it.’
