specializing in cutting-edge technology and conceptual design, london-based designer eun kyung shin’s latest project, hyperface, is an artificial intelligence gadget that displays human emotion on an electronic mask. the project is an experimental means to augment facial expression through the manipulation of our social masks enabled by AI. hyperface aims to communicate more directly, powerfully, and intuitively using algorithms based on real time emotion.

hyperface projects the emotional state that one wants to express in any given situation. ‘our face is an interface to society. as social beings, our faces are regularly affected by stressful encounters or uncomfortable situations,’ explains eun kyung shin, ‘but what if we could use AI to enhance our social masks for augmented communication? artificial intelligence is already a part of our daily lives, and it has influenced many of our real-time communications, but I am more interested in applying this technology in bypassing social and emotional limitations.’

eun kyung shin asks ‘what if we could harness AI to give us the power to face our society in unexpected emotional situations?’
